After purchasing a used vehicle in Illinois, the buyer must transfer the title and register the vehicle with the Illinois Secretary of State.
The state requires buyers to apply for a title transfer within 20 days of the purchase date.
You typically complete the title transfer and vehicle registration together.
To register a vehicle in Illinois, you will generally need:
- The assigned vehicle title, signed by the seller
- Application for Vehicle Transaction(s) (Form VSD-190)
- Vehicle Use Tax form (RUT-25 or RUT-50) depending on how the vehicle was purchased
- Proof of Illinois liability insurance
- A valid driver’s license or state ID
- Payment for title and registration fees
These documents are submitted to the Illinois Secretary of State Vehicle Services Department.
