When Do You Need a Motor Vehicle Bill of Sale in Iowa?
You will need to use an Iowa Car Bill of Sale when selling a motor vehicle in the state of Iowa.
Current Iowa DOT guidance lists a Car Bill of Sale or purchase agreement among the documents needed to title a privately purchased used vehicle.
If the title includes the updated Bill of Sale section, you can complete it there. Otherwise, you will need a separate sales document.
What to Include in an Iowa Vehicle Bill of Sale
When creating a Car Bill of Sale in Iowa to sell a motor vehicle, you should include the following transaction details:
- Your name, address, and contact information
- Buyer's name, address, and phone number
- Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)
- Vehicle year, make, and model
- Date of sale
- Purchase price, or gift relationship when applicable
- Buyer and seller signatures
For most Iowa-titled vehicles, the seller records the odometer reading on the title itself.
If mileage is not recorded on the back of an Iowa title for a model year 2011 or newer vehicle, current Iowa DOT guidance uses Form 411099. Form 411077 is used in other specific cases, including when required mileage information is missing from an out-of-state title.

The buyer must apply for a new title and registration through an Iowa County Treasurer within 30 days of purchasing the vehicle.
You, as the seller, are required to deliver the assigned title to the buyer when the vehicle is sold.
Required Vehicle Registration Forms in Iowa
When completing an Iowa vehicle title and registration transfer, you will usually need:
- Properly assigned Certificate of Title
- Bill of Sale on the Iowa title, a separate Bill of Sale, or purchase agreement
- Application for Certificate of Title and/or Registration (Form 411007)
- Odometer disclosure on the title, when required
- Damage Disclosure Statement (Form 411108) for vehicles 8 years old or newer
- Cancellation of Security Interest (Form 411168) if an uncanceled lien appears on the title
Note that Form 411099 is required if mileage is not recorded on the title for a model year 2011 or newer.
A seller may also file Form 411107, Notice of Sale of Vehicle and Delivery of Title, as evidence that the title and vehicle were transferred.
Iowa Vehicle Registration Fees
The statutory title fee is $30, plus a $5 title surcharge, for a total of $35. The buyer also pays an annual registration fee, which varies by vehicle and is prorated when applicable.
Iowa generally imposes a $10 fee plus 5% of the vehicle's purchase price as the fee for new registration, instead of ordinary sales tax on the vehicle transaction.
Exemptions and credits can apply in certain circumstances.
Does an Iowa Car Bill of Sale Need to Be Notarized?
No, not for an ordinary private sale. Neither the Bill of Sale nor the standard Iowa title transfer normally requires notarization.
However, errors or alterations in the title or transfer paperwork may require notarization. This applies to corrected or questionable documents, not the standard signing process.
