Louisiana Vehicle Registration

A Vehicle Bill of Sale is used to record a sale in Louisiana. However, to register the vehicle the seller must deliver the certificate of title. The buyer does not get marketable title until a new certificate of title is issued.

Here are the documents you need:

  • Vehicle Application (Form DPSMV 1799)
  • Assigned Certificate of Title
  • Original notarized Bill of Sale or invoice, if required
  • Odometer disclosure, if required
  • Proof of liability insurance
  • Valid photo ID

Once you have your documents ready, you can submit them:

The OMV will process the paperwork. You must pay all taxes and fees, and they’ll then issue your registration and plate if needed.

Louisiana Vehicle Registration Fees

The cost to register a vehicle in Louisiana depends on the type and value of the vehicle. Common fees include:

  • Title fee: $68.50
  • Handling fee: $8.00
  • Lien fee, if applicable
  • Local fees, if applicable
  • Plate fee based on the vehicle’s value

You may also have to pay additional taxes or fees. Get in contact with your local OMV to find out exactly how much you’ll have to pay to register your car.

Texas Vehicle Registration

After buying a vehicle, you must register and title it in Texas through your county tax assessor-collector.

You typically have to register within 30 days from the date of purchase.

Texas Vehicle Registration Forms

You will usually need the following forms when registering a vehicle with the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles:

  • Application for Texas Title and/or Registration (Form 130-U)
  • The signed vehicle title
  • Vehicle Title, properly signed by the seller
  • Odometer Disclosure, included on the title or as a separate statement
  • Proof of insurance
  • Valid ID

If you’re selling your vehicle, it’s recommended that you submit a Vehicle Transfer Notification (VTR-346) within 30 days of the sale. This protects you from liability for tickets or other incidents.

Important note: A Bill of Sale supports your application but does not replace the title or Form 130-U.

FAQs

Is a Louisiana Bill of Sale required to register a motor vehicle?

Usually, yes for a used vehicle, but not always as a separate document. Louisiana OMV says a separate Bill of Sale is not required if the selling price is already included on the title with a notarized assignment.

If it is not, the buyer will usually need an original notarized Bill of Sale or invoice.
