To submit the following to the Vermont DMV to register a car in the state:

• Vermont Registration Tax & Title Application: Completed VD-119 form
• Proof of Ownership: Title or Manufacturer’s Certificate of Origin (MCO)
• Bill of Sale & Odometer Disclosure: Required for private sales and vehicles under 10 years old
• VIN Verification: Form VT-010 is needed for out-of-state or older vehicles
• Proof of Insurance: Must meet Vermont’s minimum liability coverage
• Proof of Vermont Residency: For new residents

Vehicles must be inspected within 15 days of registration and renewed annually. Registration is completed at a DMV office or by mail.

To register a motorized boat or personal watercraft in Vermont, submit the following to the DMV:

• Motorboat Registration & Title Application: Completed VD-037 application form
• VIN/HIN Verification: A completed VT-010 form to register out-of-state, salvage, bond-titled, imported, or rebuilt vessels.

You'll also need to submit proof of ownership. The documents you need depend on whether the boat is new or used, and if it was previously titled:

• New boat: The manufacturer's Certificate of Origin, a Bill of Sale with make, year, HIN, price, date & seller's signature
• Used and titled boat: A properly assigned title and the Bill of Sale
• Used and not previously titled: The last VT registration or out-of-state registration and the Bills of Sale

Boats 16' or longer and less than 15 years old must be titled. All motorized vessels require registration unless exempt, for example, a fishing kayak.

Vermont does not require firearm registration at the state level. However, certain rules apply:

• Background checks are required for most private sales, unless exempt (e.g., immediate family transfers).
• Buyers must be 21 to purchase a handgun from a dealer (18 if transferring privately and legally).
• Federal law applies to prohibited persons and background checks through NICS.
