Idaho Bill of Sale Forms

An Idaho Bill of Sale is a legal document used to sell an item, typically of high value. It serves as evidence of the transfer of ownership, most often used for cars, vessels, and firearms.

While not always mandatory, having a Bill of Sale protects both parties in the event of legal disputes or issues regarding ownership transfer.

A properly executed Bill of Sale must be presented to the Idaho DMV or other official agencies during the registration process of certain transactions such as motor vehicles.

It does not replace a title where a title is required, but it supports ownership claims and tax calculation. Below is a brief guide to using Bills of Sale and how to register motor vehicles, boats and firearms with the appropriate Idaho authorities.

Car Registration Forms

Idaho vehicle registrations are handled by county motor vehicle offices under the Idaho Transportation Department (ITD). A Bill of Sale can support proof of purchase but does not substitute for the title.

You’ll need the following forms to register a vehicle in Idaho:

  • Properly assigned title
  • Proof of identity
  • Proof of Idaho address
  • Proof of insurance
  • Odometer disclosure
  • Completed application for title/registration
  • Bill of Sale showing price and date

Visit your county motor vehicle office, submit the documents, and pay title, registration, and applicable tax. Sales/use tax is generally based on the purchase price.

Boat Registration Forms

Most motorized vessels operated on Idaho waters must be titled (when required) and registered to obtain a certificate of number and decals through the state system.

To register your boat with the Department of Parks and Recreation, you’ll need the following documents:

  • Manufacturer’s Statement of Origin or title
  • Bill of Sale with buyer/seller details, description, HIN, price, and date
  • Completed boat/vessel registration application
  • Fees for title and registration

When you submit the documents, you’ll need to pay the required fees. Keep any temporary authorization on board until decals and the certificate of number arrive.

Firearm Registration Forms

Idaho does not require statewide firearm registration. Using a Bill of Sale is still recommended, as it’s a practical record for private transfers because it identifies the parties, the firearm, the date, and the price.

For private sales, make sure you keep copies of the following for your personal records:

  • Bill of Sale with names/addresses, make, model, and serial number
  • Any other documents needed to show lawful possession/transfer

No filing or registration with the state is required. Keep the Bill of Sale with your records to document the transfer.
