Psychology has shown that gossip is perhaps something we used during caveman times, to collect information about others, so it’s hardly surprising that now, in the age of the internet and social media, we're still indulging in the gossip and lives of others - particularly celebrities.

Hollywood doesn't seem to understand happily ever after. And boy, do we like to talk about it on social media.

Platforms like TikTok have generated an almost cult-like following of celebrity gossip - the hashtag #celebritydivorce has around 61 million views. Some users appear to go into “Sherlock Holmes” mode around these events, using their research skills to decipher every available detail and put together intricate accounts of what has supposedly happened, what caused it, how high the settlement figures are… the list goes on. Other users show support for their favorite celebrity, whilst some poke fun at the dramatics of it all.

Over the last year or so, we've used the platform as a window into some of the highest-profile celebrity divorces and separations.

So, with that in mind, we have scoured TikTok to research some of the most famous and well-known celebrity divorces and breakups and compiled a list of the exes with the most liked content on TikTok - some of them may surprise you.

top 10 celebrity splits

Johnny Depp and Amber Heard

Were you living under a rock, or did the Johnny Depp and Amber Heard trials consume your life? Most watched divorce of the year? That has to be the most-watched divorce of the century.

The highly-publicized divorce was triggered by Heard after filing due to "irreconcilable differences". Those differences turned out to be much more than that. The #johnnydeppvsamberheard TikTok hashtag gained 150 million views - after the case was streamed live for the world to watch.

The initial divorce agreement did award Amber Heard $7 million, but the final trial resulted in a separation agreement of a $15 million settlement figure awarded to Depp and $2 million to Heard.

She then disappeared into the Spanish Neverland and is apparently living in Madrid, but sightings are rare. How do we know this? Tiktok.

Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman

Who could forget the Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman divorce? Not TikTok, that's for sure.

Despite this happening in 2001, the top 10 videos relating to the divorce on TikTok have accumulated 9,495,100 likes - the most famous video received 11.3 million views.

There wasn't as much divorce drama with this one. It was Kidman who fuelled the popularity - the iconic paparazzi shot of her skipping out of the divorce attorney's office will go down in history.

The divorce took seven months to finalize, with details about the parenting plan remaining under wraps. We do know that Cruise took the majority custody and raised their adopted children in the 'Church of Scientology'.

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West

Kayne - or should we say 'Ye', as it is his legal name - forgot to keep his cool with this one. He locked it in a box and instead decided to provide us with some of the best TikTok celebrity divorce content.

One of the most liked videos is the @musicmediaco. With over 3.3 million likes, the video shows the downfall of Ye. Again, he didn't help himself and things got ugly after he shared private messages between the two. And let's not forget his Twitter (X) rants.

But again, at the core of all the - what turned out to be comedic gold- rants was a heartbroken man. Still, Ye taking it so publicized turned things ugly.

The divorce was finalized in 2022 after a two-year back-and-forth battle that almost ruined Ye's career.

Tristan Thompson and Khloé Kardashian

Following on the Kardashian theme, Tristan Thompson and Khloé Kardashian experienced a tumultuous relationship that eventually led to their divorce. Their romance began in 2016 and was frequently highlighted in the media. The couple welcomed a daughter in 2018, but their relationship was marred by multiple allegations of infidelity against Thompson.

Despite attempts to reconcile, the trust in their relationship was severely impacted. Their on-again, off-again dynamic continued until they eventually decided to part ways. Their divorce was a significant topic in the media, reflecting the challenges of maintaining a private life in the public eye. The split was handled with a focus on co-parenting their daughter, emphasizing their commitment to her well-being despite the end of their romantic involvement.

Russell Brand and Katy Perry

Russell Brand and Katy Perry's romance was like a hit pop song - catchy, vibrant, but alas, short-lived. They dazzled the world when they got together in 2009, tying the knot in a grandiose Indian ceremony in 2010, only to have the harmony fade fast.

By the end of 2011, their marriage was on the express train to Divorceville, making it official in 2012. In true tongue-in-cheek style, post-split, they've both occasionally quipped about their brief but headline-grabbing union, handling the aftermath with a mix of grace and humor.

It was a celebrity love story that burned too bright, too fast, leaving behind a trail of sparkly, tabloid fodder. \
